Update: Chobani GMO Response

A few weeks ago, I posted my reaction to the news that Whole Foods Market decided to discontinue carrying Chobani greek yogurt products due to the company’s use of cows that eat feed found to be containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

I was disappointed to hear about this and expressed this via Twitter. The company, which is quite engaged on social media and has responded to me before, sent me a link to their official statement about GMOs. In the interest of fairness, I wanted to share their response here:

“We remain totally and completely committed to ensuring that everyone, regardless of income and location, can have access to delicious, nutritious products made with only natural ingredients. As America’s No.-1 selling Greek Yogurt brand, we require a high volume of milk, and right now there is not enough organic milk available to meet our broad consumer demand.

We continue to stand by and work with the 875 farms that provide us with milk as they explore new feed options. In the meantime, we’re doing everything we can with what’s available to make the best cup of yogurt; using only natural ingredients and no preservatives, none of our non-dairy ingredients has been genetically modified, and our milk comes from cows not treated with artificial growth hormones…” said Chobani on its website.

The statement that they are sticking with their dairy providers as they “explore new feed options” seems to indicate that they are going to give these farmers time to make a transition to a new GMO-free feed source and eventually convert over totally. It remains to be seen how long such a transition will take and if Chobani will ever decide to enforce a deadline for all of their providers to make the switch.

They did make sure to point out FDA findings that there is “no significant difference has been found between milk derived from rBST-treated and non-rBST treated cows.”

Chobani ended their statement by saying that the company doesn’t “take anything for granted and [is] always looking for ways to improve…” I hope to see these improvements soon, so I can continue to enjoy their products!

What do you guys think? Will you continue to buy and eat Chobani’s yogurt products? Leave a comment below!
