Lemon Water to Jump Start Your Morning

Since I started running in the mornings 3-4 times a week, my body has responded in many different ways. First there was shock and protest (ha!), then adjustment and now, results. However, this new routine has also meant some big changes to my morning habits.

One of the new things I have been doing is having some lemon water before I leave the house in the morning. I add about a tablespoon to 8 oz. of water to start, and also drink more throughout the day). Yes, I know fresh is better, but I try not to go to the grocery store very often if I can help it, so bottled is just fine.

It’s a nice pick me up, and helps hydrate me before my run. This is obviously not a new idea, people have been doing it forever, but since it’s new for me, I thought I’d share why I do it.

LifeHack.org lists 11 Benefits of Lemon Water that are pretty amazing. Here are a few of my favorites:

  • Splash of Lemon_CC_Sam Fox PhotographyReduces inflammation – Drinking lemon water is said to reduce acidity in the body (backwards, I know) which helps with inflammation in your joints. EverydayHealth confirms this as well, saying, “Citrus foods such as oranges, grapefruit, lemon…are rich in vitamin C — a dietary component necessary for the synthesis of collagen, which helps build and repair blood vessels, tendons, ligaments…Citrus fruits are also good sources of inflammation-fighting antioxidants…”
  • Aids digestion – A big part of your diet is related to digestion and lemon water is a great way to jumpstart your metabolism and get your system, um, moving.
  • Helps you lose weight (Yay!) – The pectin fiber in the lemon helps with cravings, plus, all that water you’re drinking with it helps you stay hydrated and flushed. In my experience, it also helps me feel full longer.
  • Gives your immune system a boost – Vitamin C is a huge help for your immune system, and although I make sure to take a Vitamin C supplement daily, a little extra boost never hurt anyone–especially not right before cold and flu season.
